"Zechariah 13:9 Bible verse - They will call on My name and I will answer them"

Zechariah 13:9 Bible Study: Made into Christ's Likeness

Understanding Zechariah 13:9: God's Refining Process for His People Bible Study

Made into Christ's Likeness

" I will bring the one-third through the fire,
Will refine them as silver is refined,
And test them as gold is tested.

Just as the refining process is used to remove impurities, in order to bring out the beauty of gold, so trials reveal our inner self. This gives us the opportunity to repent of sin, and be made more like Christ.

They will call on My name,
And I will answer them.
I will say, ‘This is My people’;
And each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’ ” Zechariah 13:9

The Covenant: "This is My People" and "The Lord is My God"

The remnant will be purged, purified, and re-established in a covenant relationship with God. The expressions, "This is My people", and "The Lord is my God" recall the covenant (Leviticus 26:12) and speak here of a covenant renewal to a spiritually revitalized Israel (Ezekiel 36:28; Hosea 2:23; Romans 11:26-27).

Purification Through Trials: Refining Like Silver and Gold

Zechariah 13:9 describes a future refining process where God will put a remnant through trials and tribulations, purifying them like silver and gold, leading to a renewed covenant where they call on Him and He acknowledges them as His people. The verse signifies that trials purify a people, separating the faithful who will remain in relationship with God

The outcome is a pure, tested group that calls on God's name, and God responds by affirming, "They are my people," and they affirm, "The LORD is our God," restoring their covenant relationship.

There is Hope amidst judgment, hope that God's judgment isn't absolute destruction but also includes purification, and preserving a faithful remnant for His purposes.

There is Hope for us all in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Through the various trials and tribulations of today, we are being and purified and cleansed of all unrighteousness so we will be ready for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, ready for the return of Jesus for His bride.

In the midst of God's refining process, we need to be reminded of this foundational truth: Jesus loves you. Not because of what you do or how perfectly you endure trials, but simply because you are His. This love is the anchor that holds us steady through every season of spiritual transformation.

Jesus Loves - Worship Song

Before we continue exploring Zechariah 13:9 and the refining journey from glory to glory, let this beautiful worship song wash over your heart. As you listen, remember that every trial, every moment of purification, every step toward Christ-likeness flows from one unchanging reality: Jesus loves you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). His refining is not punishment—it's the passionate work of a Bridegroom preparing His beloved bride.

Now with hearts anchored in His love, let's dive deeper into how God's refining process transforms us into the likeness of Jesus.

From Refining to Readiness: Preparing for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb

Revelation 17:9 and the Bride Made Ready

  • Revelation 19:7-9: "Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready." It highlights that the fine linen represents the "righteous acts of the saints".

The Parable of Ten Virgins: Spiritual Preparedness (Matthew 25:1-13)

  • Matthew 25:1-13: The Parable of the Ten Virgins, which emphasizes the need to be prepared with oil (spiritual readiness) for the Bridegroom's arrival.

The New Jerusalem: A Bride Adorned for Her Bridegroom (Revelation 21:2)

  • Revelation 21:2: Describes the New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Daily Transformation into the Likeness of Jesus: From Glory to Glory

Daily we are being transformed into the likeness of Jesus. Daily transformation into the likeness of Jesus is an ongoing, progressive process (from "glory to glory") driven by the Holy Spirit as believers behold the Lord's glory. As believers, with unveiled faces, gaze upon the glory of the Lord (Jesus Christ), and through the Holy Spirit, are progressively transformed, or changed, from one degree of glory to another, becoming more like Him as they reflect His character

2 Corinthians 3:18: Beholding His Glory and Being Transformed

Based on 2 Corinthians 3:18, this inner change ("metamorphoo") involves shedding the old self to mirror Christ’s character. This journey is accomplished not through striving, but by focusing on Him, resulting in increased spiritual maturity. As we as Christians look at and focus on Jesus, the Holy Spirit changes us, making us more like Him, step by step, with a deeper understanding and reflection of God's glory

Your Kingdom Come: The Glorious Reign of Christ

Zechariah's Vision of the Lord's Earthly Reign

Zechariah anticipates the glorious day when the Lord will re-establish His reign on this earth, where it was first challenged (See Revelation 20:1-3; also Psalm 93:1; 97:1; 99:1) This will be the answer to the prayers of all those who pray Jesus' words,

Praying Matthew 6:10: The Answer to "Your Kingdom Come"

"Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven." Matthew 6:10

Navigating God's Refining Season: Practical Steps with Reflection Questions

1. Reframe Your Trials When facing difficulties—financial pressure, relational conflict, health challenges, or spiritual dryness—recognize these as God's refining fire, not His abandonment. Ask yourself: "How is God purifying my faith through this?" rather than "Why is this happening to me?"

2. Identify What's Being Burned Away Silver and gold refining removes impurities. What is God removing from your life? Pride, self-reliance, fear, unforgiveness, materialism? Journal about what the Holy Spirit is revealing needs to be surrendered.

3. Call on His Name Daily Zechariah 13:9 says "they will call on My name, and I will answer them." Make calling on God's name your first response, not your last resort. Start each morning declaring, "The Lord is my God" before checking your phone or planning your day.

4. Prepare as the Bride Like the wise virgins in Matthew 25, maintain your spiritual oil—daily Bible reading, prayer, worship, and obedience. Ask: "Am I ready for the Bridegroom's return today?" Let this urgency fuel holy living without anxiety.

5. Embrace the "Glory to Glory" Process Transformation isn't instant. Celebrate small victories—a temptation resisted, a kind word spoken, forgiveness extended. Each act of obedience moves you from one degree of glory to another (2 Corinthians 3:18).

6. Covenant Renewal Practice Regularly renew your covenant with God. Speak aloud: "Lord, You are my God. I am Your child. Refine me, purify me, make me ready for Your purposes." This verbal affirmation strengthens your identity in Christ.

Reflection Questions:

  • What trial am I currently facing that could be God's refining fire?
  • What impurity is the Holy Spirit asking me to surrender?
  • How can I intentionally "behold His glory" today to facilitate transformation?
  • Am I spiritually prepared for Christ's return, or am I living like the foolish virgins?
