The Lord A Fortress in Adversity: Finding Refuge and Strength in God Psalms 31:1-3
David's Prayer of Trust and Deliverance
In You, O Lord, I put my trust;
Let me never be ashamed;
Deliver me in Your righteousness.
2 Bow down Your ear to me,
Deliver me speedily;
Be my rock of refuge,
A fortress of defense to save me.
3 For You are my rock and my fortress;
Therefore, for Your name’s sake,
Lead me and guide me.
Great Man of the Bible David
David is the author this psalm, considered a great man of the Bible. Often in the Psalms the one praying will ask the Lord to impress upon him the brevity of his life, so that he might commit each previous day to his Creator. This is referred to here in Psalm 31, in verse fifteen. Psalm 31 is one of David's prayers of trust, a psalm of lament, but it has such a strong element of trust that it can also be classified as a psalm of trust (see Psalm 23 for an example). The psalms of trust grow out of the confession of trust that occurs in the psalms of lament. In this psalm, the relationship between the two classifications is apparent.
The Two-Part Structure of Psalm 31
There are two major sections:
1- the presentation of lament in the context of trust (verses 1-18).
2- the presentation of praise in the context of lament (verses 19-24).
The phrase, "I put my trust" pictures the action of a bird seeking refuge under it's mother's wings (11:1;17:7;91:1-4). A different word for trust occurs occurs in verses 6,14, which has the connotation of leaning on someone or something (Proverbs 3:5-6). The imagery of God as the "rock" and fortress for the believer recurs often in the Psalms (91:1-3)
Six Key Themes of David's Prayer in Psalm 31
1-God as Refuge & Deliverance:
David repeatedly calls God his "rock," "fortress," and "refuge," asking for rescue from enemies and shame, trusting God's righteousness.
2- Total Trust & Surrender to God's Will:
The phrase "Into your hand I commit my spirit" (v. 5) shows complete dependence, not despair, but trust that God will receive one's life, a sentiment echoed by Jesus and martyrs.
3- God's Steadfast Love (Hesed):
The psalm emphasizes God's covenant faithfulness, appealing to His consistent loving-kindness as the basis for deliverance.
4- Contrast Between the Living God and Worthless Idols of Idolatry:
David expresses hatred for idols, contrasting their worthlessness with the great worth of the living God who redeems and protects.
5- Maintaining Hope in God During Distress and Abandonment:
Despite feelings of abandonment and intense trouble, David's faith remains strong, believing God has good things stored for those who fear Him and waits for His vindication.
6- Encouragement for all Believers Who Wait on the Lord:
The psalm ends with an exhortation for all to "Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord".
"Oh, love the Lord, all you His saints!
For the Lord preserves the faithful,
And fully repays the proud person.
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart,
All you who hope in the Lord." (Psalms 31:23-24)

Jesus Quotes Psalm 31:5 on the Cross

You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth", was directly quoted by Jesus just prior to his death on Calvary in Luke 23:46.
Paul's Reference to Psalm 31:19 in 1 Corinthians
The apostle Paul would later refer to Psalm 31:19:
" Oh, how great is Your goodness,
Which You have laid up for those who fear You,
Which You have prepared for those who trust in You
In the presence of the sons of men!"
in 1 Corinthians 2:9: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
