Understanding Zephaniah 3: A Call to Rejoice in God's Faithfulness
Joy in God's Faithfulness (Zephaniah 3:14-17)
14 Sing, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O Israel!
Be glad and rejoice with all your heart,
O daughter of Jerusalem!
15 The Lord has taken away your judgments,
He has cast out your enemy.
The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst;
You shall see disaster no more.
16 In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
"Do not fear;
Zion, let not your hands be weak.
17 The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing."
The Meaning of "Daughter of Zion" in Scripture
The people of God would be called to sing because their deliverance had come.
"Daughter of Zion" is an affectionate title for the city of Jerusalem. "In that day": The people are first commanded to abstain from fear, to keep from hanging their arms in a posture of resignation. Instead, they were to take encouragement and strength from the new reality that their God lived among them.
Who Was the Prophet Zephaniah?
The name Zephaniah means "the Lord hides/protects." He was the great-great-grandson of King Hezekiah and therefore, of royal blood.
The Prophet Zephaniah Pronounces Judgment (Zephaniah 1:1-3:8)
God's Judgment Upon the Land of Judah
The fact of this judgement- God would sweep away everything in the land and destroy it to the ground. This would include man, birds, and even fish (Zeph 1:2-4). God planned to search with lanterns in Jerusalem's darkest corners to find and destroy all sinners (Zeph 1:12-13).
The reason for this judgement- Judah had worshiped Baal (the chief god of the Canaanite pantheon) and Milcom (chief Ammonite deity, a.k.a. Malcham or Molech), thus ignoring the only true God (Zeph 1:5-6).
Judgment Upon the Enemies of God
Philistia (2:4-6), Moab and Ammon (2:8-11), Ethiopia (2:12), Assyria (2:13-15).
The Day of the Lord: Understanding Zephaniah's Prophecy
The results of the judgement (Zeph 1:14-18). NOTE: Zephaniah evidently had in mind not only the historical Babylonian invasion of 605-586 BC, but also the future Great Tribulation (see Revelation 6:12-17).
The Prophet Announces Justice and Restoration (Zephaniah 3:9-20)
A Glad Day: God's Promise of Justice
The Millennial Kingdom: All Nations Will Worship God
Upon the (Former) Enemies of God - During the Millennium all nations will worship God (3:9,10).
NOTE: The "pure language" of Zephaniah 3:9 may refer to two things:
1 - It may indicate a reversal of the language curse at Babel (Genesis 11:9), thus allowing redeemed man to once again enjoy a universal language, perhaps composed of the best from all human languages.
2 - It doubtless carries with it a moral purity.
Israel's Future Peace and Restoration
Upon the Land of God - Israel will dwell in peace (3:13).
Jerusalem Filled With Singing: God's Presence Restored
Upon the City of God- Jerusalem to be filled with singing (3:14-15) - God himself to lead the songs (3:17).
1- Jerusalem will once again be filled with singing, for the theme of their song, the King of Israel, will be there (Zephaniah 3:14-15).
2- God Himself will lead this happy song (Zephaniah 3:17).
