Mark 10:35-45 Devotional: Jesus Redefines Greatness
Share
35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Him and said to Him, Teacher, we desire You to do for us whatever we ask of You.
36 And He replied to them, What do you desire Me to do for you?
37 And they said to Him, Grant that we may sit, one at Your right hand and one at [Your] left hand, in Your glory (Your majesty and splendor).
38 But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism [of affliction] with which I am baptized?
39 And they replied to Him, We are able. And Jesus told them, The cup that I drink you will drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized,
40 But to sit at My right hand or at My left hand is not Mine to give; but [it will be given to those] for whom it is ordained and prepared.
41 And when the other ten [apostles] heard it, they began to be indignant with James and John.
42 But Jesus called them to [Him] and said to them, You know that those who are recognized as governing and are supposed to rule the Gentiles (the nations) lord it over them [ruling with absolute power, holding them in subjection], and their great men exercise authority and dominion over them.
43 But this is not to be so among you; instead, whoever desires to be great among you must be your servant,
44 And whoever wishes to be most important and first in rank among you must be slave of all.
45 For even the Son of Man came not to have service rendered to Him, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for (instead of) many.
Mark 10:35-45 Overview: Jesus Teaches True Greatness Through Humble Service
As they are about to enter Jerusalem, Mark 10:35-45 depicts James and John asking for positions of glory, prompting Jesus to teach that true greatness lies in humble service rather in authority. He explains He came "not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life for many" defining Christian leadership.
That's Who I Praise" — Worship the Servant King
Jesus Christ — the Son of Man who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45) — is worthy of all praise, all honor, and all glory! In a world that chases power, position, and prestige, we worship a King who knelt to wash feet, who bore a cross instead of a crown, and who calls His followers to the same path of humble, sacrificial service. That's who we praise. Press play, lift your voice, and let this song realign your heart with the kingdom of God.
The Request of James and John Explained
The Sons of Thunder Ask for Seats of Glory
The "sons of Zebedee"; the sons of thunder, James and John, bold, brash men, ask to sit at Jesus' right and left hand in His glory. To be seated at a king's right hand was to take the position of most prominence, the person seated at the left hand ranked just below that (the Last Supper in Luke 22:24-30).
The Price of Greatness: Servanthood, Self-Sacrifice, and Humility
Jesus had to remind the disciples again about the price of greatness in God's kingdom, which is servanthood, self sacrifice and humility.
God Hates Pride and Honors Humility (Proverbs 8:13, James 4:6)
God hates pride and honors humility (Proverbs 8:13, Proverbs 16:5, Proverbs 21:4, Romans 1:30, 1 Timothy 3:6, 1 John 2:16, James 4:6)
Why James and John Wanted Power Before Entering Jerusalem (Luke 19:11)
As they journeyed toward Jerusalem, "they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately" (Luke 19:11), so they may have wanted to secure their power and authority as soon as possible.
To Drink the Cup and Be Baptized (Mark 10:38-40)
to drink the cup and be baptized are references to the suffering and death that awaited Jesus (14:36). Jesus wanted the disciples to understand the suffering He had to endure. Jesus asks them if they are able to drink the cup of suffering he is going to drink, highlighting that true service involves sacrifice.
Jesus Redefines Greatness: Servant Leadership in God's Kingdom (Mark 10:42-44)
The point here is not the fact that Gentile rulers lord it over them, but the very idea that they seek to exercise authority. Jesus wants each of His followers to be a servant - one who as an attendant waits on others. The word slave signifies subjection, but not bondage.
In verse 43, Jesus says, that's not the way it's supposed to be with you, If you want to be great, you have to serve others, if you want to be most important, you need to put everyone else before yourself.
First Shall Be Last: God's Kingdom Reverses Earthly Standards of Status
Jesus redefines greatness, stating that the first shall be last and the last shall be first. Jesus teaches that God's kingdom, true leadership is measured by sacrificial service rather than power, using His own mission and to give His life for all.
Jesus didn't come like all kings, to be served, but to serve.
This is the same kind of instruction coming from Paul, that our Lord gave the Apostles; Philippians 2:3-4 "Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others."
Be Like Christ - Called to Serve, Not to Be Served - Jesus is Our Model: Philippians 2:3-8
Do Nothing From Selfishness or Empty Conceit (3-4)
3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
The Humility of Christ: From the Form of God to Bond-Servant
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, as He already existed in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself by taking the form of a bond-servant and being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death: death on a cross.
God Highly Exalted Him: The Path to Glory Through Humble Sacrifice
Every Knee Will Bow at the Name of Jesus (Philippians 2:9-11)
9 For this reason also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
God gave Him the name which is above every name because Jesus made the ultimate, greatest sacrifice. The path to glory in God's kingdom is through humble sacrifice.
If You Want To Be Great, Serve Others - Mark 10:43
In verse 43, Jesus says, that's not the way it's supposed to be with you, If you want to be great, you have to help and serve others, if you want to be most important, you need to put everyone else before yourself.
Jesus Shows Us what True Greatness Looks Like (Mark 10:45)
Jesus says in verse 45, even I didn't come to be served by others, but to serve others, and give my life to save many. Jesus was showing us what true greatness looks like.
A Prayer for A Servant's Heart
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us that true greatness is found in humble service, helping others. Like You, who did not consider equality with God something to be grasped but emptied Yourself and took the form of a servant, help us to do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but in humility consider others more important than ourselves. Teach us to serve as You served — sacrificially, lovingly, and wholeheartedly. In Your name, Amen.
