Luke 6:17-19 Jesus Heals a Great Multitude

Luke 6:17-19 Jesus Heals a Great Multitude

Luke 6:17-19

17 And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases,

18 as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed.

19 And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.

Luke 6:17-19 Explained: Jesus Heals the Multitude

People traveled from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon to hear His teaching and to be healed. A massive, diverse multitude gathered. Many came simply to listen to Him teach, while others sought deliverance, and healing.

Luke notes that everyone was cured and healed, and delivered.

The crowd actively pressed forward just to touch Him. The scriptures state that "power was coming from him and healing them all," emphasizing that the miraculous healing flowed directly out of Jesus to everyone who reached out to Him.

The setting and the contents of the sermon that follows suggest that Luke is providing a shorter version of Sermon on the Mount, omitting those portions that have to do with the Law.

The Sermon on the Plain: Luke's Account vs. the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7)

Points of similarities between Luke's account here and Matthew's account in Matthew 5-7 are as follows:

1- Both begin with a series of beatitudes.

2- Both contain Jesus' teaching on loving one's enemies.

3- Both end with the parable of the two builders.

The theme of the sermon is the disciple's walk. The audience for the sermon consisted of both disciples and the great multitude. Jesus did not restrict His remarks simply to those who believed.

Tyre and Sidon: Jesus's fame extended even into the Gentile regions. the people were drawn by His teaching and healing ministry.

Jesus is still healing and delivering today. The precious Blood of Jesus is healing multitudes.

Healing Scriptures: God's Promises of Wholeness and Restoration

Isaiah 53:5 "But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes
we are healed."

Isaiah 40:31 "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."

1 Peter 2:24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

Proverbs 4:20-22 "My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh."

Hebrews 11:6 "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."

Nahum 1:7 "The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him."

Exodus 15:26 "And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee."

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome."

Let this song remind your heart of the finished work of Jesus Christ.

It's Not What We Can Do - It's What God Has Already Done

It's not what we can do, it's what God has already done, the finished work of Jesus at the Cross. It's what Jesus finished on the Cross through His crucifixion, burial and resurrection. Blessed be the God, our Father of Jesus Christ. We have hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We are healed by the precious Blood of Jesus that he shed at the Cross, once, and for all of us (Hebrews 10:10),  so that we may have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). We are walking and leaping, and praising God! (Acts 3:8).
