Option 2The precious blood of Christ the unblemished lamb - 1 Peter 1:19 redemption and holy living

Living Before God our Father 1 Peter 1:13-21

Living Before God our Father

1 Peter 1:13-21

13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

17 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you 21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Gird Up the Loins of Your Mind: Preparing for Active, Sober-Minded Faith (1 Peter 1:13)

What Does "Gird Up the Loins of Your Mind" Mean in Scripture?

1:13 Gird up the loins of your mind: Just as people in Biblical times would gather up their long robes and tie them around their waists so that they could move quickly and freely, we need to do whatever it takes to focus our thoughts on those things that allow us to serve God successfully, all the while eliminating any thoughts that would trip us up:

Laying Aside Every Weight: Hebrews 12:1-2, and the Race of Faith

1-Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2-Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

1:13 be sober: Peter’s concern here is primarily using mentally or spiritually sound judgement.

1:13 rest your hope: We need to exhibit confidence that God will accomplish all that He promised He would do. (see verse 3; Romans 8:24,25)

Active Hope: Setting Your Hope Fully on the Grace of Jesus Christ

This is Active Hope: We are "girding up the loins of our minds" a phrase meaning to "prepare for action" , being sober-minded, and setting our hope completely on the grace to be revealed at the coming of Jesus Christ.

Every Promise Made Is a Promise Kept Worship Song

Every promise God has made, He has kept. That is the unshakeable foundation of holy living. In 1 Peter 1:13-21, the Apostle Peter calls believers to gird up the loins of their minds, to be holy as God is holy, and to live out their days on earth in reverent fear — not because salvation is uncertain, but because the One who called you is faithful. He promised redemption before the foundation of the world, and He delivered it through the precious blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:19-20). The hymn Every Promise Made Is a Promise Kept echoes this same confidence — a God who cannot lie, who does not change, and whose Word endures forever (1 Peter 1:25). As you study 1 Peter 1:13-21, let this song anchor your soul in the faithfulness of your heavenly Father.

Be Holy, For I Am Holy: The Call to Consecrated Living (1 Peter 1:14–16)

Not Conforming to Former Lusts: Freedom From the Old Way of Life (Romans 12:2)

1:14 Not conforming yourselves: Believers should not pattern their lives after the desires that controlled them when they were not Christians, when they did not know God’s ways (see Romans 12:2).

What Does Holiness Mean? Set Apart, Separated, and Dedicated to God

1:15 Holy refers to being set apart or separate. We are to live so as to be dedicated totally to God and separated totally from the sin of this world.

Because God who called us is Holy, believers must be holy in all aspects of our conduct also, echoing the biblical mandate, "Be holy, for I am holy".

Conduct Yourselves in Reverent Fear: Living Before God Our Impartial Judge (1 Peter 1:17)

1:17 who without partiality judges: Our Heavenly Father is also our earthly Judge. Moreover, our relationship to Him as His children does not imply that we will escape judgment. God does not show favoritism in judgment but invokes His judgment on all people according to their works.

in fear: For Christians, this phrase should be understood as something between fear and reverential awe. We need to remember that God is both our merciful Savior (verses 3,18,21) and our holy judge (verses 15-17).

Reverent Fear: Since God is a loving Father, who is also an impartial judge, as believers, we are encouraged to spend our time here on earth in "reverence" or "fear", recognizing our status as temporary residents.

Redeemed by the Precious Blood of Christ: The Foundation of the Believer's Life (1 Peter 1:18–19)

Verse 18-Redeemed suggests the idea of offering something. God bought our freedom, paying for us with His Son’s life (verse 19).

Not Redeemed With Silver or Gold: Why Human Effort Cannot Secure Salvation

Redeemed Lives: verses 18-21  - the foundation for this life is knowing we were purchased (redeemed) not with perishables like gold or silver but

with the precious Blood of Christ, the unblemished lamb, chosen before the foundation of the world.

your aimless conduct: Peter's focus is not on any specific action, but on the way of life that his readers inherited from ancestors. Those old ways were futile, empty of power and incapable of securing salvation. Peter's readers needed to be snatched from their hopeless condition.

The Precious Blood of Christ: The Ultimate Sacrificial Lamb (Exodus 12, Leviticus 23:12)

Verse 19-precious blood: God's way of salvation is contrasted to human attempts at gaining salvation through the use of earthly means (verse 18).

Christ is the Passover Lamb For Us: Without Blemish or Spot

a lamb: Peter describes Christ as the ultimate sacrificial lamb, who is offered in our place to pay the price for our sins. The analogy here may be a reference either to the Passover lamb (see Exodus 12:3-6) or to the many lambs without blemish that were offered as part of the OT sacrificial system (see Leviticus 23:12; Numbers 6:14; 28:3).

Foreordained Before the Foundation of the World: God's Eternal Plan of Salvation (1 Peter 1:20–21)

Verse 20-foreordained: God has known (verse 2) the One who would bring salvation, even as He has known those to whom that salvation is offered and secured (see Romans 11:2).

but was manifest: This phrase contrasts with the first half of this verse. What was known only to God before the creation of the world is now made known to us.

Jesus went to the Cross at Calvary, shed His Blood, He died on the Cross, He was buried in a tomb, and He was raised from the dead three days later, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven.

Our faith is anchored in a Risen Savior, Jesus Christ, of whom we have a Hope that doesn't disappoint (Romans 5:5) and the certainty of God's Promises. Amen! Thank you Jesus!

A Prayer for Holy Living Before God

Based on 1 Peter 1:13–21

Heavenly Father,

You are holy, and You have called us to be holy in all our conduct. We come before You now with minds girded and hearts surrendered, setting our hope fully on the grace that is ours through the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Forgive us, Lord, for the times we have conformed to the former lusts of our ignorance — for the moments we have leaned on empty tradition rather than on the living power of Your Word. Remind us daily that we were not redeemed with corruptible things, with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Your Son — Jesus Christ, the Lamb without blemish and without spot, chosen before the foundation of the world.

Father, because You judge without partiality and according to each one's work, teach us to walk before You in reverent fear, in the holy awe of children who know their Father is also their Judge. Let that reverence shape every decision, every word, and every step we take as temporary residents of this earth.

May we fix our eyes on Jesus — the Author and Finisher of our faith — laying aside every weight and every sin that so easily entangles us, and running with patience the race You have set before us.

We believe in You, Father — the God who raised Christ from the dead and gave Him glory — so that our faith and our hope rest not in the things of this world, but in You alone.

Make us holy, Lord. Not by our own effort, but by the power of Your Spirit working within us.

In the holy and precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
